SUICIDE AND DENTISTS - MYTH OR FACT?
Thursday, April 26, 2007
The absence of dentists at the top of the list of professions most susceptible to suicide debunks the long running myth that dentistry is the profession most vulnerable to suicide and depression.
Dr John Matthews, President of the Australian Dental Association (ADA) said “Dentists were often told that they were not liked and that their profession is one of the most prevalent to suicide. The recent Beyond Blue study reveals this to be a myth.”
Whilst not good news for lawyers, patent attorneys, insurance underwriters and accountants which were identified as being the worst to suffer depression - it is favourable news to dentists.
“The Survey demonstrates that the public’s perception of the dental profession has improved in ‘leaps and bounds’ in the last 10-15 years. With modern equipment, improved techniques and the more relaxed atmosphere present, a trip to the dentist is likely to be a much less painful experience than it was in the past. Our members are working in a more relaxed environment and this is reflected in lower stress levels and less stress-related illnesses”, Dr Matthews said.
