More and more dentists are seeing the irreversible effects of dental erosion in adults and children whose diet consists of a regular intake of soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks. The acid in these drinks rapidly dissolves tooth enamel, causing pain and sensitivity. Of course, they also contain large amounts of sugar which significantly increases the rate of dental decay. The caffeine content in black cola drinks also adds to the problem by causing cravings for more of these drinks.
With the implementation of the Smart Choices, Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools legislated, all public school tuckshops are now limited to the sale of soft drinks to no more than two times per term. This is a real victory for Queensland in aiding the dental erosion cause and assisting to educate our school children on important health issues.
