With more than 200 FDI World Dental Congress 2023 presentations on offer from 168 speakers, there’s plenty of CPD available to fill the next 22 months.

The ADA’s On-Demand platform, which showcases presentations from FDI World Dental Congress 2023 (FDIWDC23) held last year in Sydney, Australia, has been extended from the end of May this year until the end of the current CPD cycle in November 2025 for all ADA members.

The additional time will allow ADA members who register an additional 18 months to watch the 200 presentations from 168 Australian and international speakers, featured in the event's expansive Main Scientific Programme.

It also gives everyone the chance to more effectively plan their CPD consumption over the the remaining 22 months of cycle, adding a wealth of new material to the hundreds of hours of video and audio content already available through the ADA’s member-only CPD Portal and the wealth of resources available through the Association’s National Digital Library

With presentations ranging across an impressive variety of topics from dental trauma to restorative dentistry and beyond to periodontics and oral surgery and the use of AI in dentistry, On-Demand provides 24/7 access to a wealth of learning opportunities.

To register for On-Demand, which costs just $1,100 (incl. GST) and imports watched content automatically to a member’s CPD logbook, go to ada.org.au/on-demand

If you're not currently an ADA member, it's easy to join your professional association and take advantage of great offers like this and a host of other benefits.

The importance of CPD

Equipping yourself with clinical knowledge and current techniques through platforms like On-Demand is an important part of registration as a dentist, says a spokesperson for Ahpra, the regulator for all 16 of the health professions regulated in Australia, which includes dentistry.

“Continuing professional development is how registered health practitioners maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence. It also develops the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives."

Dental Board of Australia Chair Dr Murray Thomas adds:

“It’s important that a dental practitioner regularly participates in CPD to make sure they maintain, develop, update and enhance their knowledge, skills and performance. This continual development encouraged through CPD ensures our profession remains contemporary and helps dental practitioners deliver appropriate and safe care."

From the point of view of the ADA, providing CPD materials and resources is not just a matter of adequate registration, but a matter of pride in being a quality practitioner in a profession that famously never stops learning.

In addition to On-Demand and the ADA's CPD Portal, members can also take advantage of face-to-face events organised by ADA Branches and other healthcare and clinical organisations, in addition to publications and peer-to-peer study and discussion groups to fulfill their CPD requirements.

For many practitioners, the clearest way to achieve this participation has been – and continues to be – turning to online resources, again, such as the On-Demand platform.

As an example of how popular these types of online portals have become, the ADA’s CPD Portal recorded almost 88,000 plays by members, with 75% of those playing out the entire item, plus more than 74,000 hours consumed during the 2022-23 financial year.

Keeping track of your CPD activities

The ADA provides a CPD log where every piece of content you watch on the CPD Portal is recorded. While sometimes it may take time for it to show on your log, be patient.

The recorded data includes:

- the CPD activity provider’s name;

- CPD activity name;

- journal name, article name, author (where applicable);

- online content/title, DVD title, CD title (where applicable);

- date, time and location of the CPD activity;

- number of CPD hours (excluding breaks); and

- type of CPD hours (scientific/non-scientific) that are awarded as a result of completing the activity.

Additional face-to-face CPD can be manually added via the ‘Add an Activity’ function on the log, either online or via the ADA Connect app (which you can download from Google Play or the App Store). Remember also that if you watch an online event through ADA Interact TV, you will need to log that yourself.

The Add an Activity function is handy for recording face-to-face CPD and ADJ readings. The CPD log can store activity for multiple CPD cycles, which is useful for proving compliance as this material must be kept for five years in accordance with Dental Board of Australia regulations.
