Implant maintenance to prevent biologic complications
Dental implants are a reliable treatment option for the replacement of missing teeth. As with all treatment modalities, however, technical, biological and aesthetic complications can occur. Biological complications seem to be increasing in frequency, and can lead to loss of supporting bone and the eventual loss of implants. In this lecture, the aetiology and pathogenesis of biologic complications will be presented. With an understanding of the aetiological factors, preventive measures can be initiated to reduce the risk of these complications. This lecture will also discuss the management of biological complications, and the evidence for treatment outcomes.
You will learn:
• List the types of biological complications that can occur with dental implants
• Describe the pathogenesis of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis
• Outline the measures that can be taken to prevent peri-implantitis
• Describe the treatment options for managing biological complications with implants
