Acknowledging the significant effect that dentistry has on the environment, the ADA has developed practical sustainability modules to guide practices on becoming more environmentally friendly.

Environmentally friendly dentistry was in the energy-efficient spotlight when the ADA launched its new Sustainable Dentistry: How-to Guide for Australian Dental Practices yesterday on the final night of FDI World Dental Congress 2023 in Sydney (see pictured)

The guide was developed in recognition of the fact that dentistry has a significant effect that dentistry has on the environment with dental materials like mercury amalgam fillings and resin composites a source of environmental pollution and its extensive use of water and energy.

The creation of the guide commenced with research on the environmental impacts of the dental sector in Australia and overseas which informed the development of strategies to help ADA members reduce these impacts. The strategies focus on a range of impactful areas including stock inventory management, energy efficiency, amalgam waste reduction, enhancing the built environment, active travel and sustainable measurement and evaluation.

It is hoped that the sustainability guide will empower dental practitioners to make informed decisions and implement sustainable changes that will have a significant impact on the environment.

The ADA believes that sustainable dentistry is the future and that it will play a key role in reducing the impact dentistry has on the environment.

"Sustainable dentistry is the future of the dental sector. It's the right thing to do for the planet, and it's also the smart thing to do for our businesses,’ says ADA President, Dr Stephen Liew.

"We’re proud to be a leader in sustainable dentistry. And we’re committed to supporting ADA members in providing their patients with the highest quality care while also minimising impact on the environment.”
