Course Information

This course is designed for clinicians who currently hold an Extraoral Radiation Use Licence and are ready to progress to obtaining their Cone Beam CT Use Licence. It is particularly well-suited to clinicians working in practices with an in-house Cone Beam CT unit, or those preparing to integrate Cone Beam imaging into their clinical practice. Led by an AHPRA-registered Dental and Maxillofacial Radiologist, the morning session covers all theory required for the Queensland Cone Beam CT Use Licence examination, including the production and biological effects of radiation, image acquisition principles, clinical applications and limitations of Cone Beam CT, radiation dosage, and the legal requirements of the Radiation Safety Act and Radiation Safety Regulation of Queensland. A hands-on component provides supervised experience in patient positioning and operation of a Cone Beam CT unit in demo mode, with guided discussion of recommended fields of view for common clinical applications. The Cone Beam CT Use Licence examination is conducted on the day, with results provided within a week. The afternoon session introduces participants to the systematic interpretation of Cone Beam CT datasets, with a focus on developing the foundational skills every clinician should possess. Interpretation covers assessment of the jaws for odontogenic and non-odontogenic pathology, supported by an overview of the relevant anatomy and common pathology of the paranasal sinuses, upper cervical spine, airways, and visible soft tissues of the neck and floor of mouth. The session concludes with guided case discussions, giving participants the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in a supported clinical context.
