FDI has launched a new interactive platform designed to empower patients with partial tooth loss and help them prepare for dental consultations.

The FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has launched a new interactive platform designed to empower patients with partial tooth loss and help them prepare for dental consultations.

While there is an increasing trend worldwide of people reaching old age with at least some of their teeth intact, partial tooth loss remains an issue and it can have a significant impact on the quality of that person’s life.

Recognising this, FDI developed and launched the new interactive platform for Partially Dentate Patients in January 2023, with the aim of enabling "patients to effectively communicate with their dentists, facilitating the establishment of tailored treatment and care plans specific to the patient’s needs."

There are signs that the tool, part of FDI’s Partially Dentate Patients project, is already having an effect with the completion by patients of a comprehensive Needs and Preferences Questionnaire, which they can send on to their dentist, meaning that their treating dental practitioner has "a better understanding of their oral health status and needs, allowing for more personalized [sic] treatment recommendations."

Patients are also able to educate themselves about various treatment options so they can more effectively make decisions in consultation with their dentists which will hopefully lead, says FDI, to improved patient outcomes.
