Management of Cosmetic and Functional Dilemmas in the Critical Aesthetic Zone

Course Information

Clinical dilemmas are relatively common in the critical aesthetic zone of the mouth. Such dilemmas can be a combination of both cosmetic and functional aspects and may involve endodontic, periodontic, prosthodontic, maxillofacial and/or orthodontic concerns. Examples of clinical dilemmas may include the following: Endodontic challenges associated with significant dental trauma Prosthodontic challenges associated with diminutive or missing maxillary lateral incisors Periodontic challenges associated with natural teeth and the implant supported restoration Surgical and orthodontic challenges associated with severely displaced natural teeth and restorative implants It is important to acknowledge that all clinical procedures have costs, risks, advantages and disadvantages. Interdisciplinary consultation and collaboration are vital for planning challenging cases and to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes. To introduce the concept and technique of tooth autotransplantation as a potential treatment option for carefully selected cases, particularly when alternative options are considered to be unfavourable.
