Course Information
A comprehensive course to be able to safely prescribe and avoid medication and prescribing errors.
Dentists frequently encounter patients taking multiple medications, and as such, prescribing and medication management are skills required in daily clinical practice. However, research has shown that medication and prescribing errors occur in dentistry. This course will provide structured, comprehensive, and clinically applicable content covering:
skills required to be a competent prescriber, the prescribing process and consideration of the legalities around medication use
how prescribing errors occur, and how to avoid them in clinical practice
oral adverse drug reactions and how to differentiate them from allergies
prescribing for paediatrics
managing patients taking drugs that can affect dental procedures, such as those associated with increased risk of bleeding and MRONJ
This one day seminar will provide a comprehensive course on how to prescribe safely and manage patients taking medications in dental practice.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
Apply the principles of the prescribing process to be a safe and competent prescriber
Recognise various sources of prescribing and medication error, and how to mitigate them
Prescribe common drugs appropriately, including antibiotics, NSAIDs and opioids, recognising their limitations, contraindications and place in therapy
Identify drugs that contribute to bleeding risk and MRONJ, and learn how to manage patients taking these medicines when undergoing invasive procedures
