TGA declares a SSSI for the oral antibiotic phenoxymethylpenicillin
- Medicines
In light of an oral antibiotic phenoxymethylpenicillin (Penicillin V) shortage, the TGA is allowing pharmacists to provide another phenoxymethylpenicillin product without prior approval from the prescriber.
In light of a shortage of the oral antibiotic phenoxymethylpenicillin (Penicillin V), and to help manage this shortfall, the Therapeutic Goods Admininistration (TGA) has made a Serious Scarcity Substitution Instrument (SSSI).
This SSSI allows a pharmacist to provide another phenoxymethylpenicillin product when the prescribed phenoxymethylpenicillin oral liquid or suspension is unavailable, without prior approval from the prescriber.
The SSSI for phenoxymethylpenicillin oral liquid and suspension was registered today and is in force from Monday 17 April 2023, remaining active until 30 September 2023 (unless revoked sooner).
The TGA SSSI webpage has been updated to reflect the new SSSI and you can read information about the SSSI and information for pharmacists, prescribers and patients at About the shortage of phenoxymethylpenicillin.
The substitution has PBS subsidy arrangements, and the PBS website will be updated shortly with this information.
