The Australian Dental Research Foundation opens 2023-24 grants round

The Australian Dental Research Foundation (ADRF) have opened their 2023-24 grants round to applications.

The round will run until the closing date on 22 January 2024 with the theme “reducing the burden of oral diseases”, which was inspired by a paper that appeared in the Australian Dental Journal.

For all grant applications, the Chief Investigator (CI) has to be a PhD student with an ECR supervisor and a Senior Researcher as co-applicants. Projects that include other members (for example, undergrads, MPhil and/or DClinDent) will be particularly welcome.

The opening of the new grants round follows a cessation of the grants process in 2022-23 to allow for a review of the program for strategic effectiveness and the creation of a more streamlined application and management system, with an online grants portal going live in November 2023.

During this pause, funding for current grants continued to be paid; however, there was no call for new grant applications while the review was undertaken.

The review found that there were opportunities to introduce changes that would allow the program to be more strategic in its intent, with an agreement that the future of dental academia requires an urgent focus to be placed on supporting those who are in the earlier stages of their research career. 

The grants program, currently open for applications, fund PhD students for one year with up to $20,000 awarded to each successful applicant.
