Course Information

Join the Australian Dental Association’s Dental Therapeutics Committee for an informative and interactive afternoon of education at the University of Melbourne. The Committee will provide guidance and discuss updates around the Oral and Dental Therapeutic Guidelines Volume 4, providing presentations, and panel discussions as well as fielding questions.

This education event aims to equip general dental practitioners with the confidence and knowledge required to optimize patient safety and align their practice with the latest Australian guidelines.

Learning Outcomes
  • Identify and understand changes in the Oral and Dental Therapeutic Guidelines Volume 4, with a focus on MRONJ, prescribing, antibiotics, orofacial pain, TMD, bruxism and dental sleep medicine.
  • Solidify understanding of changes to Oral and Dental Therapeutic Guidelines Volume 4 by asking questions to subject matter experts.

A/Prof Sue-Ching Yeoh 
Oral Medicine Specialist

A/Prof Sue-Ching Yeoh is an AHPRA registered Oral Medicine Specialist. She maintains a specialist private practice in Sydney as well as a clinical appointment at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.A/Prof Yeoh holds an academic post with the University Sydney and is the Discipline Lead in Oral Medicine.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General and Special Fields Stream); the International College of Dentists; the Pierre Fauchard Academy; and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow. She is currently the President of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (OMAA) and the Chair of the Australian Dental Association Therapeutics Committee. She is a contributing author to the Therapeutic Guidelines: Oral and Dental Versions 3 and 4. A/Prof Yeoh is committed to continuing professional development, having been a frequently invited speaker for the Australian Dental Association CPD programs. She has presented at national and international conferences; and has generated publications in peer-reviewed journals and has co-edited and co-authored several Oral Medicine textbooks.

A/Prof Yeoh's clinical interests include oral mucosal disease particularly oral potentially malignant disorders and vesiculobullous disease, odontogenic and salivary gland pathology, orofacial pain and temporomandibular dysfunction. Her research interests include oral carcinogenesis and autoimmune oral blistering conditions.

Oral Medicine Specialist

Ramesh Balasubramaniam is an Oral Medicine Specialist with expertise in temporomandibular disorders, orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. He has numerous peer reviewed publications, co-authored several chapters, and co-edited and co-authored three books notably “Contemporary Oral Medicine”. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. Ramesh is associate professor and discipline lead in Oral Medicine at the University of Western Australia, Dental School and is actively involved in teaching and research. He has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Ramesh was president of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (2019-2022). For his ongoing contributions to dentistry, he has received fellowships and awards, most notably the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021. He also has public appointments at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and the Perth Children’s Hospital. 



Dr Mathew Lim
Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry

Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Mathew Lim is one of only 30 registered specialists in special needs dentistry in Australia, specialising in the management of patients with complex health needs and disabilities.  He currently practices in Melbourne in the hospital sector with appointments at Royal Melbourne Hospital, and The Alfred, where he is also the Director of Dental Services.  Mathew also has academic appointments at the School of Translational Medicine, Monash University and at the Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne.  These roles include Senior Lecturer in Special Needs Dentistry, Co-Coordinator of the final year of the Doctor of Dental Surgery program, Convenor of the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry) degree, and Associate Director - Research International.  Mathew is Assistant Registrar of Specialist Dental Practice at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and Past-President of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Special Needs Dentistry.  He contributes regularly to local and international advisory committees and working parties, including being on the expert panel the recently released Version 4 of the Oral and Dental Therapeutic Guidelines.


Dr Smitha Sukumar
General Dentist

Smitha is a general dentist and Senior Lecturer at Sydney Dental School. She leads the Oral Microbiome research group investigating oral and systemic health links including antimicrobial resistance. Smitha integrates her research interest with her teaching - as Discipline Lead for Treatment Planning, her teaching focuses on patient centred care, positioning oral health as integral to general health. Her clinical and academic expertise is recognised through the award of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK and as Chief Examiner for the Fellowship (General Dental Practice), Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.


Dr Jessica Leung
General Dentist and Pharmacist
BDent, MPharm

Dr Jessica Leung is a Canberra-based general dentist and pharmacist with degrees in both dentistry and pharmacy from the University of Sydney. She holds positions on a range of consumer and clinical advisory committees.

With a unique background spanning both dentistry and pharmacy, Dr Leung brings a broad healthcare perspective to clinical decision-making and patient care. She enjoys all aspects of general dentistry and is committed to evidence-based practice, patient-centred care, and professional education.
