ADA spokesperson Dr Michael Foley said the decision was "shortsighted" and was not in the health interests of Gympie residents nor of Queenslanders as a whole.
The ADA has responded in a Channel 7 media package to a recent decision by Gympie Council to remove fluoride from the town's water supply, with Queensland the only state which permits local government areas to exercise this authority.
Describing the decision as "shortsighted", Dr Foley says that conspiracy theories which cast doubt on the efficacy of water fluoridation were without merit when considered against a considerable body of evidence in favour of the practice.
He went on to say:
“If water fluoridation caused any harm whatsoever, whether it was cancer or thyroid disease or brittle bones or anything like that, it would have been obvious that the southern states and western states [which have fluoridated their water for longer] would have had more than Queensland."
Dr Foley said a study from Queensland Health even found that “every dollar spent on water fluoridation would save between $6-$20 in future dental treatment costs”.
