With leading presenters drawn from Australia and around the world, the ADA’s biennial Congress, to be staged in Adelaide next year from 19-22 May, promises an expansive range of learning opportunities.

L-R Dr Kostas Karagiannopoulos (UK), Professor Avijit Banerjee (UK), Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield (Australia)

Dentistry is a profession built on continuous learning. As new research, techniques and technologies emerge, staying informed is essential to delivering the best possible care for patients.

Continuing professional development (CPD) plays a key role in keeping dental professionals' knowledge and skills up to date. One of the best places to build your CPD hours is at the Australian Dental Congress 2027 (Congress 2027), which is being held in the beautiful festival city of Adelaide, South Australia.

The event’s scientific program, which includes the Main Scientific Program (83 sessions over five streams), as well as a range of special learning sessions and pre-Congress workshops, features high-calibre speakers from across the globe. All leaders in their respective fields, these experts will share their knowledge, insights and expertise across four days of thought-provoking presentations, hands-on clinical workshops and specialised learning experiences, including Lunch 'n' Learns.

Meet three of the speakers bringing their skills and experience to eager audiences at Congress 2027:

Dr Kostas Karagiannopoulos (UK)

A specialist prosthodontist, academic and researcher, Dr Kostas Karagiannopoulos is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at University College London. He leads Bio-Emulation in the UK, an international group focused on preserving and restoring dental tissues using nature as a guide, and co-founded Prosthoworks in 2021 to deliver advanced prosthodontic education. His areas of interest include fully guided composites, management of the worn dentition and natural-looking prostheses.

Advanced Injection Moulding Workshop (Restorative, Aesthetic & Materials)

Monoshade Injection Moulding for resins is widely taught but what about layering and dealing with posteriors? This course will explore all the limits of the technique to achieve natural effects with a blend of analogue stratification and fully guided morphology. We also cover posterior rehabilitations with a paste stamp technique and semi-indirect resin overlays. The workshop will also cover posterior rehabilitations using a paste stamp technique and semi-indirect resin overlays.

Professor Avijit Banerjee (UK)

Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry at King’s College London, Professor Avijit Banerjee holds three international honorary chairs. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the UK Oral & Dental Research Trust and the Oral Health Foundation. His work spans cariology, minimum intervention and minimally invasive dentistry, biomaterials science, clinical trials and health policy. He has authored five textbooks and more than 188 peer-reviewed papers.

Lunch & Learn session on Cariology & Minimum Intervention Oral Care

Building on his main Congress presentation, Professor Banerjee's Lunch & Learn will offer 10 delegates the opportunity for an in-depth discussion and Q&A on contemporary dental caries management. The session will explore the minimum intervention oral care (MIOC) delivery framework, including its four interlinked clinical domains, prevention-based approaches to managing carious lesions, minimally invasive techniques and the use of bio-interactive materials. Delegates will also have the opportunity to seek clinical advice and discuss how these principles can be applied in practice.

Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield (Australia)

A practicing specialist periodontist and academic at the University of Western Australia and the University of Sydney, Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield is a board member of the Osteology Foundation, a committee member of the European Academy of Osseointegration and Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research. She has published extensively in periodontal regeneration and the management of peri-implant diseases and has co-authored ITI Treatment Guides.

Peri-implantitis & Periodontal Regeneration Workshop (Periodontics & Implants)

Part 1 Periodontal Regeneration

This hands-on workshop will provide dental professionals with practical skills and advanced knowledge to enhance patient outcomes in regeneration and biomaterial-based treatments. The workshop will address the indications and procedures for regeneration at intrabony periodontal defects and molar furcation defects.

Part 2 Peri-implantitis Treatment

Peri-implantitis is a plaque associated pathological condition characterised by clinical inflammation of the peri-implant soft tissues (bleeding/suppuration) and progressive bone loss. This workshop will provide dental professionals with practical skills and advanced knowledge to enhance patient outcomes in peri-implant disease management. The hands-on exercises will address procedures for non-surgical and surgical treatment of peri-implantitis, including implant surface decontamination and biomaterial-based surgical reconstructive treatment of peri-implantitis.
